The Cornerstone..."...You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." - 1Peter 2:5-6 In ancient times, the cornerstone was the most essential element in the successful construction of a lasting building. The cornerstone was carefully chosen of its physical strength and the truth of its corners. It was then laid at the corner of the foundation as the key reference point for all the construction. As the Bible uses this symbol, its alluding to Jesus Christ, the chief cornerstone of God's household--the church. We at Cornerstone Church acknowledge Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone to guide and direct in every aspect of our church's life and development, and we've chosen it to be our name as a constant reminder of that promise.
Meet our Pastor...
Reverend Dr. Michael D. Guthrie has been teaching the Bible for 30 years and is known for his quirky humor, life-related teaching, and practical instruction. He and his wife, Cathy, are long time residents of Ross Township. Cathy owns and operates Maple Valley Farms, a small organic honey business. Pastor Mike, a pilot, enjoys flying small airplanes, remodeling, and the outdoors. Their son, Joshua, currently is a missionary pilot with I-TEC Ministries and their daughter, Bekah, is finishing training at the Josef Korbel School for International Studies in hopes of pursuing overseas missions as well. Pastor Mike holds earned degrees from the Community College of Beaver County (AA/Professional Pilot), Taylor University-Fort Wayne (B.A.), Asbury Theological Seminary-KY (M. Div.), and United Theological Seminary-OH (D. Min). His doctorate was awarded for his creative development of a chronological Bible study on the life of Christ using the four Gospels. Pastor Mike has written a number of community Bible Studies, including "Struggling Against Spiritual Forces: A Biblical Strategy for Successful Living Amidst the Unseen World of Angels, Demons, and Satan" ; "Unleashing the Power of the Holy Spirit: A Bible View of the Holy Spirit: His Nature, His Work and His Gifts" ; "Moving Beyond Mediocrity: Practical Instruction on Shattering Religious Boredom and Spiritual Apathy" ; "Discovering the Life of Christ: A Biographical Study of the Life" ; and his recent "If I Should Die Before I Wake: Unlocking the Biblical View of Life After Death".
